I cannot get an IP (dhclient fails) because my Ethernet cable is not 100Mbps and Full Duplex as Ubuntu anticipates

If you ethernet cable is 10Mbps and Full Duplex then inform Linux for this:

$ sudo mii-tool -F 10baseT-FD eth0
$ sudo dhclient eth0
